Hostel In Southern China by Zoka Zola Architecture + Urban Design

Hostel In Southern China by Zoka Zola Architecture + Urban Design

Description :

A hostel, a training center, family retreat for corporate employees, and a vacation retreat for organization of elderly and disabled people are uses of this building.

The 24 required bedrooms are all one floor above ground level for better ventilation and security. Common spaces like restaurant, bar, living room and conference rooms are all on the ground level; thus integrated with the outdoor spaces on the site and the surrounding grounds, including the swimming pool and barbecue areas.

It is worth mentioning that it is envisioned to use bamboo for structure, finishes and furnishing of the hostel.
Bamboo was traditionally used in Asia for building similar two story structures. Pioneering a contemporary bamboo structure of this kind as an initial prototype will contribute to the world effort to reintroduce this type of sustainable building construction.

The Prospect House by Jonathan Segal Architect

The Prospect House by Jonathan Segal Architect

Description :

This 7,200 square-foot lot was an abandoned brown-field site, vacant since 1992. The architect/owner used the space to build a private, urban residence for his family with an on-site architecture studio. The residence is a stucco box resting on and supported by Corten steel wall planes, providing both privacy and noise attenuation. The main living area is surrounded by a reflecting pool on one side and a glass floor on the other. Below grade, where the office and recreation facilities reside, the glass floor/ceiling liberates the space and allows ample natural light. The house is open and flowing extending the livable space into the private garden and reflecting pool. Boundaries are dissolved and extended through sliding panels and lightness, transparency, and expansive views.

Nakahouse by XTEN architecture

Nakahouse by XTEN architecture

Description :

Nakahouse is an abstract remodel of a 1960's hillside home located high in the Hollywood Hills, just below the Hollywood sign.

The existing home was built as a series of interconnected terraced spaces on the downslope property. Due to geotechnical and zoning constraints the foundations and building footprint were maintained. The interior was completely reconfigured, and the exterior was opened up to the hillside views and the natural beauty of the surroundings.

A large terrace was added to link the kitchen/ dining area with the living room, with a steel stair leading to a rooftop Jacuzzi deck . Terraces were also added to the bedroom wing and the upper master bedroom suite.

The exterior walls are smooth black plaster, designed to render the building as a singular sculptural object set within the lush natural setting. A series of abstract indoor-outdoor spaces with framed views to nature are rendered in white surfaces of various materials and finishes; lacquered cabinetry, matte white quartz, epoxy resin floors and decks.

Contemporary Weekend House by Smith & Vansant Architects

Contemporary Weekend House by Smith & Vansant Architects

Description :

This 2700 SF vacation house developed in response to the character of the site, near the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and the spare but playful contemporary sensibilities of our clients. The house is nestled into its sloping wooded site, barely visible from across the pond it looks out over. Visitors approach via a woodland path and cross a simple bridge to the house. The house design takes advantage of the sloping site by fully utilizing the lower level. Orientation of the structure takes advantage of Southern sun and Western views.

Although the house is not large, it was laid out and zoned carefully to meet the needs of vacationing clients with frequent guests. The principle living spaces are very open and flowing, with dramatic expanses of glass and strong connections to wrapping decks and a screen porch. Ample and durable Entry and Mudroom space was developed to handle frequent arrivals & departures; storage near the entry accommodates outdoor gear for all seasons. The upper level is exclusively the domain of the Master Suite, with gently curving roofs lifting to the view. Three Guest Bedrooms are located on the lowest level, allowing for complete privacy between hosts and guests.
